Artist's statement:

I don't know where to start so I will start by saying that when I started some years ago, I was mainly concerned with lines, shapes, proportions, the possibility of transferring on a two dimensional piece of paper, a single point of view of Nature. I felt better as my skills increased, but four years at a Fine Art school made me realize that what I was after had nothing to do with mimesis. This world I live in, this world I experience through my senses doesn't seem to let me go beyond the appearances it projects.

"There is no monument of history which is not at the same time a monument of barbarism". Walter Benjamin

In my new work I am interested in giving form to what seems on the one hand so abstract and on the other so concrete: TIME.
To reach that endeavour I use gloss paint because of it opacity, its ability to swallow everything and to leave us standing there staring at its silent reflective surface.

The wiring of our brain make us prone to give meaning to almost everything. Pattern arrangement, colour arrangement, causality...all idiosyncratic ways of creating a narrative out of singular elements or events. In THE PUZZLE, I try to deal with this by creating arrangements living the meaning open ended and up to the viewer.

The world is a big circus and we all are clowns, jugglers, beast tamers, wrestlers, acrobats. The colours I use illustrate the sad feeling I have that time is washing away the seriousness of our existence. It seems that everything is an uncanny jock. Our consciousness doesn't allow us to feel first hand someone else's pain, and dreams. We are the prisoner of our own consciousness, which is why in the work the surface is inhabited only by one being.

I use wax and oil paint to create an organic textured surface, that give the impression that the work is not yet finished. It parallels my faith that the work is open ended.

My optimism lies in the hope that with the right teaching, the new generations will transcend the tragic human condition through cooperation.
